Debbie Brown
Board Chairman
Laird Norton Company
Since June 2012, Debbie has served as Board Chairman of the Laird Norton Company, a 164-year-old, seventh-generation Family-owned business with a diverse portfolio of investments in real estate, wealth management, and consumer products.
Debbie is also Board Chairman of their largest subsidiary, Laird Norton Properties, a fully integrated real estate company. She is currently a member of their Nominating and Compensation Committees and serves in an ex-officio role on their Governance Committee and Family Council. Debbie works closely with their independent CEO and Family President and is actively involved in planning their annual Summit, a three-day retreat involving their entire family.
Prior to being named Board Chairman, Debbie served as a director of the Company from 1996 to 2007 and beginning in 2011, was elected to a second term. During her first Board term, she served on their Compensation, Investment and Nominating Committees, and as a Board representative on the Company’s 2010 Long Range Planning Committee. Prior to joining the Board, Debbie led the planning and implementation of their Children’s Program, affectionately known as “Camp Three Tree.” She also contributed to the planning of their Next Gen Program for their young adult family members ages 21-35.
Outside of her involvement with her Family company, Debbie serves as an independent director for two other family-owned companies. Recently, she chaired the Board Advisory Committee for a 90-year old family-owned retail hardware company in Seattle. With the 4th generation unable to identify a CEO successor, Debbie, along with the other fellow advisors, helped the family directors complete a sale of their company. Debbie also previously served as a Director of Family Business Network-North America chapter, a not-for-profit network of family businesses, committed to enhancing family governance and generational success. She has also been an invited guest and speaker at numerous family business events and conferences. Debbie especially enjoys sharing her family’s best practices in family governance and “lessons-learned” with shareholder communications.
In 1990, Debbie founded and served as CEO of Pacific Preschools, Inc., a network of private, high quality, worksite childcare programs. In 1997, she led the sale of the company to Bright Horizons, the premier provider of employer-sponsored childcare, and early education and, a short time later, participated in their IPO. For the next twenty years, Debbie served as their Vice President of Regional Development during which time she led new site selection and assisted in the development of sixty new corporate childcare facilities.
Debbie and her husband Henry live in a suburb of Seattle, Washington. They enjoy boating, kayaking, skiing, hiking, yoga, and most of all – spoiling their eight grandchildren, all under age eight!
